The Mystery of a Recently Discovered Lost Treasure

Post by Gerald Lawrence »

I have some very exciting news to announce, in the form of a story about a lost song. The song is "Lucky Star"

Image

This sheet music was published in 1956 and you will notice that it says on the cover "Sung by Ruby Murray" not the usual words "Recorded by Ruby Murray on Columbia xxxxxx". A copy of the sheet music was kindly sent to me a few years ago by David Frankish, who some of you will remember was secretary to the Ruby Murray Fan Club until the mid-70s when it closed.

He confirmed to me that this song had never been released on record, and he told me an interesting story. Some time during the 80s, Ruby was playing a club in Huddersfield where David lives, and he asked her about this particular song. Ruby herself told David that she did not recall anything about it - she didn't remember singing it, and she did not think that EMI would have any tape of it in their archive. He showed her a copy of the sheet music and she was at a loss to explain anything about it. A complete mystery!

During 2004 when I was helping EMI compile the list of recordings for the boxed set "Anthology: The Golden Anniversary Collection", this song was added to the list and EMI were asked if they would carry out a search, in case they had a copy. The search revealed the two previously unreleased songs "Come Into My Heart" and "Jimmy Unknown", which we had heard from acetates supplied by Bernie, plus the two songs which nobody knew about "If I Were a Blackbird" and "The Isle of Innisfree". But nothing about "Lucky Star".

Then out of the blue, in my post one day arrived a CD from Brian Henson with "Lucky Star" on it! I was totally amazed, and phoned him immediately. It seems that a friend of his (who has asked to remain anonymous) is a sound engineer specialising in archive material, and within his collection was a copy of the song on an unreleased record, I suspect something like an acetate. I understand that it was recorded in 1956 from a BBC Radio broadcast that was aired during that year. It is only speculation at this stage, but we think it might have been a Cyril Stapleton Show Band Show on which Ruby appeared and sang this song.

The music publishers are therefore correct in saying "Sung by Ruby Murray" and they may have given permission for the recording of the initial performances to be made for internal purposes, and perhaps to promote the song in the hope that one day it might be recorded by Columbia and then subsequently released. Brian has told me that he believes he has somewhere a copy of the New Musical Express issued during 1956 that says that "Lucky Star" is in fact to be Ruby's next recording for that year, but of course it never happened.

So I have made a copy of the song and given it a bit of a clean up on my PC, and posted it in the Library for you all to listen to. Our anonymous friend points out that with suitable playback equipment a higher quality recording could undoubtedly be made, and what I have is a "roughcut listening copy". Nevertheless, the cleaned up version in the Library reveals that this is a really lovely song. I think Columbia missed another hit for Ruby by not recording it for release in 1956 or 57, and the reaction from the studio audience would seem to confirm this.

So my really grateful thanks go to all concerned (David, Brian and Brian's friend) for allowing us to discover yet another treasure from our favourite singer. I can't stop playing this new song - it is just as if I were back in 1956 (and 16 years old!) and have just been out and bought a new record! How appropriate that we can celebrate another Golden Anniversary this year - the discovery of a lost treasure 50 years after it was recorded.

Lucky Star

Post by Brian Henson »

Not knowing that Gerald had chosen today to present 'Lucky Star' on the website, it was a complete coincidence that this afternoon I decided to make a careful search through my copies of New Musical Express to once again find the report I remembered reading which suggested that 'Lucky Star' was to be Ruby's next record. I knew that vocalist, Johnny Brandon, had recorded the song - and once I found the release date of that, it wasn't long before I also spotted the report connecting it with Ruby. It turned out to be a mention in the 'Alley Cat' column (the NME gossip column which I'm sure many of you will remember on the back pages). It was printed in the issue dated Friday 2 March 1956, and here are the 'Cat's' precise words ....

Is the market being flooded with too many records by Ruby Murray? Her latest - "Lucky Star" was composed by Johnny Brandon.

As Gerald has indicated, at the time the tracks for the boxed set were being compiled, EMI particularly checked their archives for 'Lucky Star', but no tapes could be found. My guess is that the broadcast recording, which Gerald has now added to the library, was heard by an NME reporter who wrongly assumed that it was to be Ruby's next release. Whether or not the song was ever seriously considered for recording at Columbia, I think we can now be sure that the session didn't take place. However, this broadcast recording, which has miraculously been preserved, is now finally available on the website for us all to enjoy.

While I was thumbing through the NMEs I found several reports about Ruby's promotional trip to the USA. She actually flew out (with Norrie Paramor) on 4 March 1956, and Bob Hope was on the same flight. Her American label, Capitol, were plugging 'Please Make Him Jealous', and she had many radio and tv spots lined up. It was on this same trip that she famously met Frank Sinatra, to present him with an NME award.

Coming so soon after the 'Alley Cat' report, the American trip may well be the reason that EMI didn't record 'Lucky Star', as she wouldn't have been around to do much promotion here. The broadcast, in fact, may well have been the only occasion she ever sang it - so it's not surprising that she had no memory of the song when David Frankish asked her about it.

Enquiries are going on to establish precisely in which show the song was broadcast. At this stage I cannot be sure such information will be found .... but watch this space for further news.

Hello Friends.

Once again both Brian and Gerald should be congratulated for coming up with this unheard broadcast of 'Lucky Star'. We knew that the broadcast taping existed when we were working on the Golden Anniversary Release and Brian tried his hardest to get his hands on it. Fortunately for all of us, his persistance has at long last paid off. I never cease to be amazed at the wealth of musical knowlege that Brian possesses. Gerald has done his technical magic, yet again, and the end result of his hard work has resulted in a truly magical track for all of us to enjoy. I am sure that you will all agree that the amount of work that they have both put into making this 'gem' available to us all is very praiseworthy indeed.

Please let them know that their efforts are appreciated as it is very disheartening when there is no response from all of us who are interested in the website.

From me personally, - thank you both very much indeed. Your hard work has provided us with a real treasure - WELL DONE, BOTH OF YOU<

Adios Amigos. Bernie

What a great song. Johnny Brandon was certainly a very talented guy.
I've listened several times and can't imagine anyone else singing it as well as Ruby. What a lovely appealing lilt on 'leave' in the line ' Someday soon your lucky star will leave you'. Catches me every time!
The backing in the middle section - the the well known song 'You are my lucky star' is a nice touch too.
Thanks for sharing it with us Brian.

I agree with mark, this song has some nice little touches to some words, which only Ruby could do. The tune also sounds very familiar, and I can’t think why, Any Idea’s?

Gerald & Brian, I feel awful about this, but when I made my earlier post I was so excited and wanted to hear the song I never congratulated you both on all the hard work that you had done to give us this rare treat. Thank You.
Regards
John.

Hi folks,
I have just got back from a short holiday and what a great suprise to find that Rubys version of "Lucky Star" has been found.

I had the sheet music in my collection but like most fans had never heard Ruby sing this song.

As usual Ruby does not let us down it is a great song performed as only Ruby could.

Brian thanks to you and of course your friend who let us have this material,it goes to prove that we still may find 0ther items out there somewhere.

I can't forget Gerald who has once again worked his computer genius to let all fans now own a copy of this song, thank you Gerald.

Best Wishes
Graham.
