Fabulous females such as Ruby and Lita ...

My top favourite recordings of Lita are the four sides she recorded for EMI during 1965. As fans of Ruby will know, these tracks appear on the Vocalion CD ‘ Five Fabulous Females’ alongside a lovely selection by Ruby, Joan Regan, Marion Ryan and Jean Campbell. I’ve been playing this CD quite a lot t...

Lita - the memories

As Bernie states above – he was very concerned about Lita’s well being and we discussed the matter on several occasions, whilst being careful to retain Lita’s privacy and dignity. Lita loved animals and was never happier than when she was taking her dog for a walk on Wandsworth common – a short walk...

Ruby - Ed Sullivan ?

Hi Martin, From the listings I have, it doesn't look like Ruby appeared on the ' Ed Sullivan Show afterall. Which of course, was a great loss to the American public and Ruby too, as I understand it was the cream of US variety shows, like SN at the LP was here, and she would have gained mass exposure...

Ruby in the States

More info regarding Ruby's visit to the States in 1956 ( from NME ) The departure hall at London Airport last Sunday was crowded with Ruby Murray fans, who came to bid her farewell - together with some Irish Pipers - for her visit to America. In a seperate reception room, Ruby, with Norrie and Joan ...

Singer Ruby Murray departed from London Airport for a 3 weeks' visit to America last Sunday - whilst controversy was raging concerning photographs of her which had been issued in the USA. Ruby alleged that these pictures had been faked...

Burtey Fen, Lincolnshire.

It was great to meet you at last Gerald ! To others who may not have heard of this place, hidden in the fens ( Gerald will vouch he found it difficult to find!), we have a display here for Ruby with signed sheetmusic, album covers and pictures - plus various other references to Ruby around the build...

For Ruby and Bernie

No matter what they tell us, no matter what they do. No matter what they teach us, what we believe is true. No matter what they call us, however they attack No matter where they take us, we'll find our own way back. I can't deny what I believe, I can't be what I'm not I know our love's forever, I kn...

Documentaries

A documentary about Ruby's life is long overdue. I can understand TV companies ( run by young executives in short pants ?) not wanting to risk a programme on a name that they, themselves, may not remember. 'The South Bank Show' for instance would prefer to profile George Michael or Robbie Williams f...

Lucky Star

What a great song. Johnny Brandon was certainly a very talented guy. I've listened several times and can't imagine anyone else singing it as well as Ruby. What a lovely appealing lilt on 'leave' in the line ' Someday soon your lucky star will leave you'. Catches me every time! The backing in the mid...

Many thanks for your words Bernie. This is such a friendly site ! For us guys, ( to make a change from Jimmy ...lol!) here's the words to 'Hello Jeannie' .... and the song also lends itself very well to an adaption - ' Hello Ruby Hello '. Hello Jeannie hello, Hello Jeannie hello. I've been far away,...

Hello Jeannie - but Goodbye Jimmy !!

Today I found a single in a charity shop that I had to buy ( only 25p!) for no other reason than curiosity !

It's ' Hello Jeannie, Hello ' by Jack Dailey.
A male vocal of Ruby's song 'Goodbye Jimmy, Goodbye'.
A Fontana label recording from'62.

It's actually the B side - but very pleasant !

Other versions

In a strange sort of way I like Gracie Fields 'Scarlet Ribbons' ... but not as much as Ruby's version !

Didn't know about Gary Miller's 'Congratulations', Graham ! ( not to be confused with Cliff's Eurovision hit !)

More of the same everyone !!

Ruby onstage

Thanks John !

The Edna Savage recording of 'Evermore' is also the title of a Vocalion CD ( CDLK 4120 ) which contains 30 songs in total - including duets with Michael Holliday.

Ruby onstage

Whenever I saw Ruby onstage during the 1980s she always started her act with ' S'wonderful '.
Besides her hits, Ruby also usually included a tender version of Lena Martell's hit ' One day at a time '.

Do any other fans have memories of songs sung by Ruby during her stage appearances ?

I hope this topic hasn't been covered before ... but as you will all know, many songs were covered by various different artistes in the 50s. Many singers would find themselves competing in the charts with their contempories who had put out the same song on disc. Although this is a Ruby Murray forum ...
