Re: Lucky Star

I couldn't rest until I'd nailed the mystery of Ruby's apparent 2-week appearances on ATV's Saturday Showtime. Some further back-tracking through the NME's of February 1956, establishes that she was on a 6-week run as star of he show. See the TV review cutting from NME of 17.2.1956, which reviewed t...

Re: Lucky Star

Sorry I omitted to include the page from TV Time in my last message. Here it is now, with an enlargement of Ruby's show. http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c332/musikooluk/TV%20Times%20-%20Saturday%2011%20February%201956%20-%20A_zpsz5urgddz.jpg http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c332/musikooluk/TV%20T...

Re: Lucky Star

Meanwhile I've been pursuing the idea that it might have been a recording from the ATV Saturday Showtime, and have found the relevant page of the TV Times for Saturday 11 February 1956. It doesn't prove that Ruby sang 'Lucky Star' on the show, but the presence on the recording of a decent sized orch...

Re: Lucky Star

Well! As Frankie Howard would have said ..."I was amazed!" I've just re-read all those posts from 2006 that Gerald kindly linked to in his message, but the entire episode seems to have got completely wiped from my memory. Oh well, having now dusted off these old NME's again, I have at least spotted ...

Re: Lucky Star

Ha! Hello again Gerald, as you will note from the timing of our respective messages - we were both tapping away at the same time, and your post beat me by just a few minutes. I haven't had a chance to check that link you just gave to the earlier discussion - but I sure need a memory jog, because I h...

Re: Lucky Star

Thanks for the fast responses to my earlier post from Bernie Burgess and John Kendall. I know I have a lot of catching up to do, but thanks to your tip-off, John, I've just listened with pleasure to the broadcast recording that Gerald discovered and uploaded to the Song Samples section of this site....

Lucky Star

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c332/musikooluk/Sheet%20Music%20-%20Lucky%20Star_zps1eebmpee.jpg Many years ago (when you and I were young, Bernie) we were discussing this sheet music, and as I recall no one was able to explain how or why Ruby's photograph appeared on the cover. Just this afterno...

Re: Ruby on BBC4

Thank you for drawing attention to the Timothy Spall programme Graham. I've just whipped through it to find the appropriate passage, and so anyone else can go straight to it, this link should take you there: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b013rknf To find the beginning of the Ruby spot, you can fas...

Ruby on TV

There was a surprise appearance by Ruby on BBC4 TV yesterday evening during a 30 minute compilation of clips from the series of short cinema films about life in Britain produced by documentary film maker, Harold Baim. Although it only skimmed the surface of this wonderful film archive, we were able ...

Re: Ruby On The Radio

I agree it was a delightful interview by John Hannam. Does anyone know when it was recorded, or on which programme it was originally broadcast? Ruby sounded totally relaxed and gave excellent responses to Hannam's questions about her career. John Hannam is not a name I'm familiar with, but as we've ...

London Palladium Centenary Calendar 2011

There are various celebrations going on at the moment to celebrate the 100 years of the London Palladium. The National Film Theatre screened an evening of film clips a few days ago. No mention of Ruby Murray's appearances I'm afraid, but there is also a TV special to look forward to on BBC2 at 9pm o...

Re: David Whitfield DVD

I expect several of you will like me have received your copy of the 'David Whitfield on TV' dvd. Apart from the joy of seeing new material of Ruby, I must say it's also great to see the Jones Boys in action at last (especially when joined by their girl vocalist for 'Ain't That A Grand And Glorious F...
