Plaque Unveiling

Congratulations to everyone who has contributed photographs and commentary describing the big day. To Gerald for your speedy re-design of the website home page to mark the event, and for making all the press coverage available for us to read. Sandy's photographs are wonderful - and I was particularl...

City Hall webcam

I received a private message from Ralph Lortie, following my earlier posting on this thread, suggesting I upload pics that I'd captured from the webcam. Thanks for the suggestion Ralph. In response I've now added just one to the photo library. The rest are not much different from yours and John's, a...

The City Hall Gang

Well done John and Ralph. I too had captured about 10 pics, but I can't compete with yours which look really great. Did you notice that the time above the webcam image was 12.00. I was sure that Belfast was the same as mainland uk time, so I guess whoever looks after the camera forgot to move the cl...

The Belfast cam

A great idea, indeed. But whatever time you choose, be sure it's daylight. I just looked in at 8pm and the image is too dark to pick out any detail. I did a similar pre-arranged pose a couple of years ago on Broadway during a trip to NY, and was viewed in 3 different countries. It's possible for the...

Recent CD releases

I couldn't see the Cover of the recent Xtra label CD (Softly Softly) in the library, so I've just uploaded it for future reference - together with two other recent CD releases. Don't you know that today's March 17   It's the day for the wearing of the green  Brian

Pick Of The Pops

Someone on the Whirligig message board has this week posted the playlist of the very first edition of 'Pick Of The Pops' - which I would never have remembered was introduced by Alan Dell. It's good to note there was a Ruby record played in that programme, but more than that there was also one by Ray...

It's The Irish In Me

It's The Irish In Me I don't know if any of the above members bought a copy of this CD. I know it was listed on Amazon, but there were problems with delivery. I can tell you that it is available from a mail order company named 'Nostalgia Direct'. In fact, in their latest catalogue - which I receive...

I'm sure there aren't any others, but one of Ruby's songs from 'Irish And Proud Of It', 'Miss O'Leary's Irish Fruit Cake' was later recorded by Clinton Ford as 'Miss Hooligan's Christmas Cake'. Most of the lyrics (and the ingredients of the cake) are the same, but the composer is given as 'Melville'...

I heard Ruby's 'Christmastime In Ireland' played on Saga Radio a couple of days ago on David Hamilton's morning programme. I'm sure that's the first time I've ever heard that played on the radio. I noticed today that it's on a new various artists CD compilation of Christmas records, so I suspect tha...

Many thanks Bernie. I'm looking ahead to possibly having to write a piece about Ray Burns in the future - so any info on him would be much appreciated. His career goes back quite a long way before his Columbia recordings. He'd previously recorded in 1949 with the Ambrose Orchestra.

Ray Burns

Ray Burns, you will remember, was one of the vocalists with Ruby, Ronnie Harris and Diana Decker on the recording of those two great songs from the film 'Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. I seem to recall hearing him on the radio a few years ago saying he was still singing, but I think he died shortl...

'Yours' magazine

Has anyone responded to your request to see the 'Yours' feature, Bernie? I'm spending a few minutes catching up on messages, so I'm not sure if it's been mentioned elsewhere - but in addition to the recent issue which featured the full page article on Ruby, 'Yours' have now brought out a separate 'S...
