It's been a long time since I contributed an item upon the website so I delved into my cuttings and found something which fans may find of interest.
It has often crossed my mind that there must come a time when a singer realises that they can no longer hit that certain note and that the popularity is changing.
Singers can change a song to suite the voice for example Shirley Bassey has changed the end of the song Goldfinger as I guess That last note is difficult for her now.
But popularity is another thing to deal with,in an article given to Dick Tatham Ruby is asked had she ever been badly hurt?
Rubys reply......"I was doing a Summer Season at the Windmill Theatre owned by Jack Jay in Great Yarmouth
One night Jack and his wife Freda threw a party at their lovely house right on the seafront.
Most of the people there were from show business and I knew them well.Bernie kindly offered to look after the kids so I had come to the party on my own.
I was standing talking to Val Doonican when a group of people who were'nt in show business came up.They surrounded Val and started chatting away to him.I found myself edged out of the circle.
No-one came to talk to me.I felt terrible.I remember the days when I had people crowding round all the time.Maybe a man would not have minded so much. But any woman will know how I felt.
Vals wife Lynette resued me.Bless her.She took my arm chatting to me as she did and led me into the circle of people. That eased the situation.
Maybe it sounds silly but when I got back that night I had a darned good cry.
I guess the last sentence says it all.....Ruby was human and like us all wanted to be popular.........Thats why this website is so important and her poularity must be kept going by her fans thats why if you have a story similar to this post it it helps keep her memory alive.
Best Wishes
