Top 50 music moments in N. Ireland

Post by Teddy O'Neil »

The Belfast Telegraph has been running this week a series of articles on the top 50 moments in the musical history of N. Ireland. - and in 5th place is Ruby Murray - the belle of Belfast city, for her 5 simulatenous hits in 1955. Maurice Jay (local DJ from Radio U105) writes:

"Putting this into perspective, if a Belfast singer had five top 20 hits at one time now, he or she would be regarded as a superstar. And in those days, you had to sell significantly more records to make the Top 20. "

Ruby was always our superstar - but nice to see she is still remebered.

Hello Teddy.

The first four 'musical moments' must have been outstanding to be placing Ruby into fifth position, but then I would say that wouldn't I?

Adios Amigo Bernie

Hi Bernie,

The top 4 moments were:
1 The Undertones - classic rock hit 'Teenage kicks'

2 'Thems' debut gig 1964 - marks the arrival of Van Morrison

3 Snow Patrol - Largest ever N I concert (40,000, +) June 2010

4 The Good Friday Agreement gig at Waterfront Hall in 1998, with U2 and Ash

It's all a matter of taste, but I agree Ruby should have been No. 1.

Dana's Eurovision song contest winner was at No 13
The Beatle's Belfast gig 1963 was No 14
while Gary Moore (who has a blue plaque similar to Ruby's at Ulster Hall) only managed a reference at No 40 !

Cheers, Ted

I agree, Ruby should have been number 1!
But she is in our eyes, anyway, isn't she? :D
